In its 50th anniversary year, BMW M granted the wishes of its fans, who had been clamoring for a BMW M3 Touring for years . Here is the sporty 510 hp family sedan with disengageable 4x4. We tell you all its details.
BMW M had never developed a wagon version of the M3/M4 family, although the M5 Touring did exist in E34 and E91 versions, the latter with its naturally aspirated V10 engine. The arrival of this body represents the fourth variant of the current M3/M4 family, after the coupé, sedan and convertible.
Logically, the new BMW M3 Touring shares a mechanical basis with the M3 and M4, but there are some exclusive specifications for this model that we have been waiting for so long.
510 hp and without manual gearbox
The BMW M3 Touring is only available in the BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive version, i.e. the 510 hp version with the eight-speed M Steptronic gearbox and always combined with the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system . There will be no rear-wheel-drive version with a manual gearbox.
Thanks to the 3.0 TwinTurbo engine, the BMW M3 Touring accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and takes just 12.9 seconds to sprint from 0 to 200 km/h. As standard, the top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, but with the M Driver's Package it can be reached at 280 km/h.
In normal configuration, the distribution of power between the two axles has preference for the rear axle. In 4WD Sport mode it sends more power to the rear axle, while switching off Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) activates 2WD mode, leaving you with pure rear -wheel drive.
Specific adjustment: comfort and sportiness go hand in hand
According to BMW, when developing the M3 Touring, they focused on finding the balance between the sporty performance expected of an M3 and the ride comfort for everyday use and long journeys that BMW Touring has to deliver. .
To achieve this level of torsional rigidity of the body structure and chassis supports, specific reinforcement elements have been installed on the underbody and the load compartment.
Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers and M Servotronic steering are standard. M Compound brakes are standard and carbon-ceramic can be chosen as an option.
As in the classic M3 and M4, the wheels are 19 inches in front and 20 inches in the rear.
Up to 500 liters of luggage space in a digitized interior
As a novelty, the BMW M3 Touring has the new BMW Curved Display that we encountered in the i4 and which has also reached the new 3 Series.
It is a module made up of a 12.3-inch screen and the central information screen with a diagonal of 14.9 inches , which surround the driver's seat and provide a level of information never seen before in a car of its size and approach.
They can show M-specific widgets with lots of details about car configuration and tire condition. As an option, the BMW Head-Up Display with M-specific information can also supplement the information shown on the displays.
As standard it has M Sport seats , sports seats that include heating and which, very characteristic detail, illuminate the M3 logo on the headrests.
Those looking for a family sedan with a sportier approach can opt for M bucket seats with a carbon fiber structure . These seats close the sides a lot, both at the level of the backrest and the bench, so that the occupants will not move even in the strongest supports.
With them, the weight gain is considerable, since they reduce the weight of the car by 9.6 kilos. But without a doubt, those who buy a Touring do so because they want functionality and capability that neither sedans nor coupes have.
That is why it stands out in the M3 Touring that the trunk has a capacity of 500 liters (20 more than the M3 Sedan) and that if we lower the backrests which are divided 40:20:40 we can achieve a maximum capacity of 1,510 litres.
Differentiating aesthetics
Aesthetically, the BMW M3 Touring stands out for the frameless kidney grille in an upright position that gave so much to talk about when presented in the models that we have known so far.
Also note the large side air intakes, the muscular wheel arches and a compact and muscular rear, with the electrically operated tailgate and the rear window which opens independently.
M3 Touring models came with a gloss black roof finish as standard. Roof rails are standard and Gurney profiles to direct the air are specific. As an option, the roof can be finished in body color and an M carbon fiber exterior package is available as an option.
Available for orders in September
The world premiere of the BMW M3 Touring will take place at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in June 2022. Orders for the new BMW M3 Touring open from September 2022 with the first units going into production in November 2022. 2022 in Munich next to the BMW M3 Sedan.
At the moment BMW Spain has not disclosed the price that the BMW M3 Touring will have on the Spanish market, but if we take into account that a BMW M3 xDrive Berlina costs 111,400 euros and an M4 Coupe xDrive Competition 124,050 euros, we can expect this base price of around 135,000 euros.
