Ferrari has screwed up with the Purosangue in a basic detail that a Dacia Sandero solves much better

With all production sold for the next two years despite being the most expensive SUV that exists, the Ferrari Purosangue is showing a before and after mark in the history of the Italian brand.

Ferrari was only willing to enter the crossover universe in its own way and with the Purosangue it has done so, since it is unique in its kind. Although that does not mean that there are some gaps in the exceptional design work that the people from Maranello have done with their new model.

The magic of design

With the Ferrari Purosangue , the Prancing Horse brand has proposed that we see SUVs with different eyes. Before its arrival, there were already sports SUVs with a very high level of performance, but the Purosangue sets a new standard, not only in the high-flying SUV segment, but in the market in general.

Although it is true that we have not had the opportunity to try it, at least for now, you just have to see it to understand that it is completely different from any of its rivals, if it has any.

And we are not talking about behavior, but about design. Ferrari has managed to hide the enormous dimensions of the Purosangue through its exterior lines. In fact, in the pictures it looks like a kind of compact crossover, but nothing is further from reality because it measures 4.97 meters long , 2.02 meters wide and 1.59 meters high.

They are dimensions similar to those of an Audi Q8 or a Polestar 3, but it gives the impression that the Ferrari is not as big and heavy as these models, although it stops the scale at 2,030 kg. What's more, no one would say that its tires are 22 inches in front and 23 inches in the rear. It is the magic of the proportions and the pencil of the designers of the Centro Stile Ferrari where it was conceived.

Of course, the design team led by Flavio Manzoni has also put a lot of effort into the interior and the Purosangue manages to surprise with elements such as the “suicide-style” rear doors, its four independent seats or a 472-litre boot.

Another of its particular characteristics is the arrangement of controls . Almost all of the current cars have a screen in the center to manage the multimedia system and other functions, but in the Purosangue it is located in front of the passenger.

It is not the first time that Ferrari has placed a screen in this area, but it is the first that is not limited to displaying information and serves to manage all infotainment functions.

In this way, two well-differentiated spaces are created , one on the driver's side fully focused on driving and another on the passenger side, which can take over the multimedia reins.

Nor should we forget that a symmetrical dashboard design makes things much easier in terms of costs when it comes to adapting the driving position to each market depending on the side on which you drive there.

Be that as it may, if the driver travels alone there is no problem. In the same way as in other Ferraris, multimedia can also be managed through the steering wheel controls and digital instrumentation. But not having a central touch screen nearby prevents you from taking your hands off the wheel and looking away from the road.

At least that's what the theory says, but Ferrari's approach has a loophole: the touch controls for the climate control . If something has been criticized in recent years, it is the obligation to use a touch screen for functions as basic as raising the interior temperature, turning off the climate control or activating the heated seats.

When there are physical buttons for these functions, everything is easier. They're easy to get used to and you don't have to take your eyes off the road to use these controls, just by touch.

On the other hand, when you have to access different menus through the central touch screen or the climate control controls themselves are tactile, everything gets complicated and something that could be done in seconds and safely with buttons becomes, in some cases, in an odyssey and synonymous with distractions.

Even science says that touch screens are more dangerous than the buttons on an old car. And this is precisely the gap in the interior of the Ferrari Purosangue because all the functions of the climate control are managed through touch controls.

From the regulation of the temperature to the air conditioning of the seats, going through the demisting of the front and rear windows. It can be seen well in one of the videos that Shmee150 was able to record at the presentation of the Italian model.

Therefore, Ferrari has managed to reduce the risk of distractions by moving the central touch screen away from the driver and, in addition, it offers the possibility for the passenger to take part and operate the infotainment at will. But, although the distractions do not come from looking for a song or using Apple CarPlay, they are guaranteed when it is time to use the weather.

The only thing that can be done without looking is to raise and lower the temperature through the rotary control that incorporates the main touch screen of the climate. And we must not forget the touch controls on the steering wheel, which do not seem to be easy to use either and remind those who now want to eliminate the Volkswagen Group from their cars after recognizing that they are a mistake. Of course, no one is perfect.
