The Porsche 911 (992) GT3 RS, developed for the track, but also usable on the road, promises to be the definitive 911 in the range. After months of waiting, Porsche has announced that it will be presented on August 17 at 5:00 p.m.
At the moment, the German manufacturer has not revealed any technical information about the sports car and has limited itself to publishing new photos of the prototypes and their spectacular appearance.
To see them, there is no doubt. It's a car developed with one goal in mind: beat all possible times and be the sportiest 911 with a license plate imaginable.
The photos are accompanied by a brief quote from Andreas Preuninger , head of the GT range at Porsche, and responsible for the development of all Porsches with the GT or RS seal for over 20 years.
"The new 911 GT3 RS is even better prepared for track use than its predecessors. The responsive, high-revving 4.0-litre boxer engine has an output of around 500 hp and has proven ideal for days on the track. track and for customer races, which is why we focused primarily on aerodynamics and chassis when developing the new 911 GT3 RS.”
Andreas Preuninger is more than just an engineer, when he started out at Porsche, he was also a driving instructor at the brand's driving school, long before taking over as head of the Porsche GT department. He knows firsthand what customers want and how a sports car should behave.
The photos published by Porsche confirm the work done on the aerodynamics, since we can see huge air intakes on the hood (even larger than those of the 911 (991) GT3 RS of 2018) and a spoiler simply gigantic.
The power, which remains around 500 hp, may disappoint some, since the 991 GT3 RS Phase 2 offered 520 hp. In any case, it's likely that Porsche engineers have maximized the power-to-weight ratio, which is more important than raw power in a racing car.
The 911 RS saga
In 1972, Porsche launched a special model of the 911. Lightened and more powerful, distinguished by a front bumper with integrated spoiler and a wing nicknamed " ducktail ", the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 . When it hit the market, it became Germany's fastest production car.
With this model designed as a racing car homologated for the road, the German manufacturer had only one idea in mind: to make Porsche shine in the GT championships.
To do this, the cars entered had to be produced in small series. The 500 cars needed for this homologation sold like hot cakes and Porsche ended up producing more than 1,000 copies of the 911 RS 2.7.
Over the generations of 911, the name RS reappears on the 911 SC (1984), the 911 3.6 (1991), the 3.8 and, from 1995, on the 911 type 993. It was not until 2003 , with the 911 (996), when GT3 was added to the RS designation. At that time, its 3.6-liter engine offered 381 hp.
Today the line continues with the imminent arrival of the 911 (type 992) GT3 RS . In a few weeks, we will know more about the last descendant of such an illustrious line.
