The British Grand Prix could not have started more eventfully. Before the first lap was completed, several incidents forced the red flag to be raised. The biggest, the multiple crash at the start of the race, which ended with Guanyu Zhou being knocked over , slipping on the track and crashing into the metal fences.
Fortunately, the Chinese driver was able to get out of the car despite the bad position he was in, because his Alfa Romeo went over the tire wall. This accident camouflaged the protests of some activists, who jumped on the track on the first lap to complain about the Grand Prix, but found a red flag.
Russell, Zhou, Gasly, Albon, Vettel, Tsunoda and Ocon, involved in the accident
The crash involved nearly half the grid, and the main culprit appears to be George Russell . The British pilot performed a dangerous maneuver pinning Pierre Gasly against Zhou, using leverage with the Alfa Romeo, which flipped and flew through the air until it found itself against the guards that separate the fans from the track.
Fortunately, information from the circuit suggests that Zhou is well, or at least out of danger , undergoing medical tests at Silverstone Health Centre. Also in good condition is Alexander Albon, the other driver whose physical compression was an issue after the crash.
Albon instinctively braked upon encountering the incident, but behind Sebastian Vettel could do nothing to avoid him and crashed into him. The Williams was ejected across the entire track until colliding with Esteban Ocon , who has badly damaged suspension but was able to fix it during the red flag and will return to the track.
This accident served at least to boycott the boycotters , since several activists who had threatened to sabotage the Grand Prix jumped onto the track on the first lap, with such bad luck that the race had already been suspended and they did not not even been on screen for a single second.
At the start, Max Verstappen opted for a softer tire than Carlos Sainz to gain position, and he did, but now he will have to come back to second place since the first lap is not complete. We'll see what strategy Sainz will use to retain the pole position he won on Saturday.
As for Fernando Alonso, he had got off to a terrific start , passing both Lando Norris and Sergio Pérez to finish fifth, but now he will have to start seventh again. Bad luck for Alonso, although the most important thing is that there is no reason to regret major damage after a scare like this.
