An electric Mazda3 ? Leaked patent suggests Mazda is thinking about it

28/12/2022 at 10:25

A few weeks ago, Mazda announced its medium-term plan. Among other things, by 2030 it expects that between 25% and 40% of its global sales will correspond to electric vehicles. Today, a few days before the start of 2023, its EV range is reduced to just the MX-30. Things could change soon if a leaked patent turns out to be true.

The Drive had access to a series of illustrations registered by Mazda. The sketches show an electric platform that, even without specific details, makes it clear that Mazda is thinking of an architecture capable of housing an electric motor in the front, in the rear axle or in both axles.

The two most prominent aspects that the leak brings up in conversation is, on the one hand, the size of the battery, which will have to be greater than the 33.5 kWh currently offered by the MX-30. Second, the vehicle's proportions, which clearly suggest a compact-sized sedan. It is inevitable to think of Mazda3.

If the Japanese firm wants to accelerate sales of its electric vehicles, betting on a compact sounds like a good way to achieve it. The question is, would a sedan be the ideal option? Will the brand take advantage of the good name of the Mazda3 for its electric vehicle? Will it also be offered in a hatchback body?

Many doubts remain in the air. In fact, since it is the leak of a platform patent and not of a specific model, Mazda may not produce it and instead bet on another type of architecture. We will leave doubts in a few years.
