Although there were those who gave Maserati for dead, the trident brand is stronger than ever and takes its role as luxury firm Stellantis very seriously , even if that means it has to prepare for a future . 100% electric . The Italian company's goal is to have a zero-emission variant in all cars by 2025.
That date is fast approaching, so the launch of the first all-electric Maserati is just around the corner. It will be the Maserati GranTurismo Folgore and it is already rolling on the road to make it clear that the brand's DNA is not in danger.
It's often said that a Maserati without a V8 engine isn't a Maserati, but those with the trident have already shown they know how to break the mold. The MC20 with its 620hp Nettuno V6 engine is the best demonstration of this, although the real test for such a passionate brand will be the next generation of the GranTurismo .
The rival of the Porsche 911 disappeared from the Maserati catalog in 2019. Four years later, its replacement will hit the streets and it will do so with a completely different recipe, since it abandons the V8 of the last GranTurismo to become the first Maserati fully electric.
It will follow the script set by the Maserati Grecale and will be available with petrol engines and a zero-emission version called Folgore . Although it has not yet been officially presented, we were able to get an idea of its external appearance a few weeks ago , thanks to a camouflaged test unit.
Now the Maserati GranTurismo Folgore is out for a walk again and this time it's not hiding so much. As well as showing off its final design, it shows off part of the interior (although it still hides the gist) and allowed us to hear it for the first time.
Yes, it's electric, but Maserati is not about to forget the sound. The brand considers this question to be fundamental in each of its cars, but especially in the GranTurismo, which implicitly carries sportsmanship in its name. For this reason, part of the development team focused on creating an artificial "soundtrack" .
It is not even comparable by far to the heavenly sound of the V8 of its predecessor, but it must be recognized that it is more successful than in the other electrics. Of course, Dodge and its fake tailpipes had a competitor in making good-sounding electrics . At least they ring.
But that's not all. After the GranTurismo ride through California with comedian Sebastian Maniscalco, we also know what the new 2+2-seater Italian beast will be capable of .
According to its creators, it will be able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds and its maximum speed will exceed 320 km/h. In its time, Maserati assured that it would have more than 400 hp, but these figures confirm that it will be much more powerful and will approach the 761 hp offered by its direct rival, the Porsche Taycan Turbo S.
The video also talks about its ability to recharge the battery ultra-fast. It will be able to recover enough energy in five minutes to cover 100 km, but Maserati has not yet revealed the total autonomy that its 105 kWh battery will provide .
Another of the things that Maserati officials specify is that customers will have at their disposal a multitude of customization options . But that's nothing new, we already know that almost any Maserati can be custom-designed.
There are still many things to discover, but little by little, the Maserati which marks a turning point in the history of the brand is becoming known. We will leave doubts in a few months, when it is officially presented in early 2023 . It will hit the streets next year, shortly before the Maserati Grecale Folgore.
