Audi Q8 e-tron test: renowned electric SUV, improved autonomy, quality at the rendezvous

Test de l'Audi Q8 e-tron : SUV électrique renommé, autonomie améliorée, qualité au rendez-vous

The all- new Audi Q8 e-tron is now available to revolutionize the premium electric SUV market. Despite its name, it is very different from the Audi Q8 mechanically, as it is actually an upgraded version of Audi's first electric series, the Audi e-tron, which was launched five years ago. years.

This Audi flagship electric car comes with notable aesthetic and performance upgrades for its two body versions, the classic and the sportier Sportback . In addition, it is equipped with a long list of innovative technologies and new batteries that have corrected one of the main weak points of its predecessor: autonomy.

We had the opportunity to get to know the Audi Q8 50 e-tron quattro , which represents the entry level, during a first meeting. Here are our impressions of it.

The keys to the Audi Q8 e-tron are not limited to a simple name change

Audi Q8 E Tron 072

Staying true to Audi's "living with progress" slogan, the sophisticated Audi Q8 e-tron represents an evolution of its predecessor in terms of durability, design and performance, seeking to rival rivals such as the SUV Mercedes EQE , the BMW iX , the Tesla Model X and the Polestar 3 .

This update to the electric SUV goes beyond mere aesthetic or nomenclature changes, with a strong commitment from Audi to technical improvements focused on superior driving dynamics, including chassis, suspension and steering. .

The Audi Q8 e-tron is available in two bodies, one conventional and the other Sportback, with aesthetic and interior space differences, the latter being more expensive by 2,500 euros than the SUV version.

The simplified range offers three versions, all with the brand's " quattro " all-wheel drive and two equipment levels: Advanced and S-Line . The basic version is the Audi Q8 50 e-tron , which now has an output of 340 CV (250 kW) and an engine torque of 664 Nm, thanks to a battery of 95 kWh gross and 89 kWh net offering a range of up to 487 km in the WTLP cycle for the SUV (and 501 km in the Sportback).

Audi Q8 E Tron 071

Above the access version of the Audi Q8 is the 55 e-tron model , which has two motors (one per axle) producing up to 408 hp (300 kW) and powered by a 106 kWh battery offering a range of up to 576 km for the SUV and 595 km for the Sportback.

The top-of-the-line model is the Audi SQ8 e-tron , fitted with three engines offering system power of almost 503 PS (370 kW) and maximum torque of 973 Nm, with a homologated range of 465 km for the SUV and 483 km for the Sportback.

The new Audi Q8 e-tron features a larger capacity battery with improved chemistry, replacing the previously used 71 kWh battery. The smallest battery in the range, that of the Q8 e-tron 50 , is now the most capable thanks to this new battery.

According to Audi, this battery also benefits from up to a 20% increase in energy density thanks to manganese-free cells and a layered structure producing more energy while maintaining the same size and weight (approximately 700 kg).

By improving its aerodynamics, the Audi Q8 e-tron has undergone visible aesthetic changes that have a positive impact on its loading performance. Using 11kW AC, the battery can be fully charged in around 9 hours and 15 minutes, but with an optional 22kW charger, charging time is reduced to around 4 hours and 45 minutes.

However, for the two most powerful versions that support loads of up to 170 kW, the charging time is considerably reduced, with around 10 minutes to recover around 120 km of range and half an hour to go from 10% at 80%. In addition, the optimized charging curve avoids peaks and maintains charging powers of more than 100 kW until reaching 80% of the battery.

Aesthetic adjustments to the Audi Q8 e-tron aim to improve its aerodynamics

The Q8 e-tron is almost identical in dimensions to the e-tron, measuring 4.91m long, 1.94m wide and 1.63m high, with the Sportback variant slightly shorter by 1 cm. However, the changes to the exterior design of the Audi Q8 e-tron are noteworthy, especially at the front.

The iconic Singleframe grille is now almost completely closed and is highlighted by the brand's new two-dimensional logo, which is an eye-catcher.

The vehicle design features headlights that can be fitted with Matrix LED technology and are visually linked by a frame, thus emphasizing the width of the car. For the first time, the headlamps incorporate daytime running lights recognizable by their four horizontal stripes.

Also, spoilers were added under the body to channel airflow around the wheels. A system of active electric slats has been installed to regulate the supply of air to the radiator, these opening and closing automatically as needed.

Audi Q8 E Tron 041

The changes to the SUV resulted in improved appearance and interior space, as well as better aerodynamics with a drag coefficient (Cd) reduced from 0.28 to 0.27 for the Q8 e-tron quattro and 0.26 to 0.24 for the Q8 e-tron Sportback. Although this may seem insignificant to some, these figures are remarkable for an electric SUV because they have an impact on consumption and autonomy.

Observing the side of the vehicle, the running boards located between the axles where the battery is located are particularly noteworthy. The side sills and wheel arches can be painted in body color or " Manhattan Grey ", as can the rear bumper. A laser inscription on the B-pillar identifies the model.

Within our test unit, we noticed that the side mirrors, which are actually optional cameras, were also very noticeable. We particularly liked the new rear bumper as well as the redesigned spoiler, which recalls Audi's electric design language and hints at future models.

In terms of personalization, the Q8 e-tron is available in eleven colors, including five new ones, such as ' Soneira Red ' metallic, ' Magnetic Grey ', ' Madeira Brown ' metallic, ' Floor Silver ' and ' Ultra Blue ' metallic ( only available for S versions). Additionally, the rim selection has been expanded, with sizes now ranging from 19" to 22".

Unsurprising interior design

Audi Q8 E Tron 011

Although the changes to the Audi Q8 e-tron compared to the e-tron are minimal, it retains a technological and contemporary appearance. Attention to detail and perceived quality are typical of an Audi of this caliber, which now uses more sustainable materials like technical fabric inserts made in part from recycled PET bottles (optional).

In terms of design, up to three screens are used to play a key role: a 12.3-inch screen for the dashboard which can be personalized (for example, to display navigation information); a central 10.1-inch screen which mainly houses the multimedia system and the on-board computer, and an additional 8.6-inch screen for weather information which has haptic controls and is located below.

The first two equipment, which are color, full resolution and driver-oriented for more comfort, are equipped with MMI touch technology . The basic functions are easy to use, but getting the most out of them will take a bit more getting used to. However, their operation is very intuitive. In the connectivity section (with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto), the Q8 e-tron also achieves excellent results.

We had a little more trouble adapting to the reversing cameras fitted to the Audi e-tron, which are part of the options (costing just over 1,600 euros), and whose information is displayed on two small OLED touch screens located in the doors, easy to adjust.

Indeed, camera mirrors contribute to better aerodynamics and reduce road noise inside the vehicle compared to conventional mirrors, especially at high speeds. In addition, they offer a very sharp image, especially in the presence of sunlight.

However, given that we are used to looking through regular rear-view mirrors, it can seem strange to have to divert our eyes to screens to perform maneuvers such as changing lanes, especially when looking at the left screen. .

As for the rear seats, the generous 2.92m wheelbase and slightly reclined bench seat allow a tall passenger to fit comfortably in the outboard seating positions, providing ample headroom and legroom. However, the central square is usually narrower and harder.

As for the trunk, the Audi Q8 50 e-tron offers a capacity of 569 liters with all available places (529 liters for the Sportback) and a practical, wide and raised loading opening. Plus, there's an extra 62 liters of storage space under the front bonnet, ideal for carrying charging cables.

Driving the Audi Q8 e-tron offers an optimal level of comfort and obvious improvements are felt

Audi Q8 E Tron 058

As soon as we adjusted our position, we took our Audi Q8 50 e-tron quattro for a short but very demanding course. This route is mainly made up of sections of sinuous curves that start from the surroundings of Bilbao and head towards Santander, passing through mythical places such as the climb to the sanctuary of "La bien Aparecida", an ancient stretch known to rally lovers.

Right from the start, the electric SUV was very comfortable and moved with ease, even if it is not its natural habitat. It was silent because perfectly insulated, and its driving was very easy and pleasant.

Visibility was good and the large panoramic sunroof provided ideal light inside the cabin. Even on a sunny day, the screens were perfectly visible, without any distracting flashes.

Audi Q8 E Tron 067

The brand clearly worked on improving the dynamics of this car, which resulted in a marked improvement over its predecessor. Particularly noteworthy is how nice, quick and direct the steering is now, with a natural feel and a 14.6:1 ratio, compared to the e-tron's 15.8:1.

Other aspects such as the air suspension (standard), which effectively absorbs road irregularities, as well as the stability control, have also been improved. Paddles on the steering wheel (optional) allow you to adjust the level of electric energy recuperation, while the selector's seven different driving modes (one of which, 'Auto' mode, automatically adjusts the configuration) are more distinct from each other than on the e-tron.

Audi Q8 E Tron 056

Although we have prioritized customization and dynamics due to the characteristics of our route, by using the " Allroad " and " Offroad " options, it is possible to take tracks and modify the suspension height up to at 76mm. On the other hand, the “ Efficiency” and “Comfort ” options are better suited to an urban environment and long journeys. Despite weighing over 2,500 kg, the Q8 50 e-tron is responsive and well balanced, with smooth and effective brakes and an energy recovery system. However, in the most complex passages, it can have noticeable inertia.

Audi Q8 E Tron 039

During our first and brief experience with driving aids, we mainly tested assistants such as the lane change and keeping assistant, as well as the predictive efficiency assistant. The latter adjusts the speed according to the presence of vehicles in front of you, and in other situations such as bends or speed limits detected by radars. We found that these helpers worked well and didn't seem too intrusive.

Even though it was the access version, the combined power of its two motors was more than enough for quick everyday use. Also, its range seemed to be adequate for regular trips. However, if you often take longer trips, the Q8 55 e-tron with its larger capacity battery might be more suitable because of the numbers it allows.

Audi Q8 E Tron 034

Even though we subjected the Q8 50 e-tron to a rigorous test for a car of its characteristics, its consumption remained around 23.6 kWh/100 km. This is above the minimum value announced by the manufacturer for this version, but slightly lower than the maximum consumption (which varies between 20.3 and 24.2 kWh/100 km depending on weather conditions). If one takes flatter and faster roads, it is likely that consumption could be reduced.

The car offers a combination of luxury and power, with a setup that improves driving dynamics. Sometimes you can even forget that you are driving an electric car.

Audi Q8 E Tron 036

It is undeniable that the Q8 50 e-tron left us with a very good impression, but it is worth remembering that it is the only model of the range available for the moment. Since we have not been able to carry out an in-depth test to measure its consumption and compare it with other versions or variants, it is difficult to make a more precise assessment.
