BYD's cheapest electric car challenges other Chinese manufacturers in the European market by being offered at a price equivalent to that of a SEAT León

The MG4 Electric has quickly established itself as one of the most popular electric cars, especially thanks to its affordable price which sets it apart from its more expensive competitors.

However, BYD , a Chinese brand that has recently entered the market, is looking to change that by launching the BYD Dolphin , a zero-emission compact car that aims directly to compete with the MG4 Electric .

A few weeks ago we introduced you to the BYD Dolphin, a Chinese electric car that has been available for some time in its home country and has been adapted for sale in the European market. In China it's a 4.07 meter long utility vehicle, while in Europe and the rest of the world it's a 4.29 meter long compact model.

The BYD Dolphin now comes in four versions and three different power levels . The basic version is the BYD Dolphin Active , equipped with a 95 hp electric motor and a 45 kWh battery. Although the autonomy is not yet revealed, BYD announced a price of 29,990 euros for this model.

This basic version is equipped with many standard features, including rear parking sensors, 360 degree camera, LED headlights, intelligent cruise control, blind spot detection, intelligent information on the limits of speed and automatic emergency braking in town.

The BYD Dolphin offers a similar full package to the base MG4 Electric , but is slightly cheaper than its fellow counterpart, with a starting price of 30,690 euros unaided. However, the MG4 is considerably more powerful than the BYD due to its larger battery capacity of 51 kWh and 170 HP.

The BYD Dolphin Boost model , which sits above the Active version, has a similar level of competitiveness to the basic MG4 in terms of price, with an identical cost of 30,690 euros . It also offers a higher horsepower of up to 177 HP, along with additional features such as 17-inch wheels and multi-link rear suspension. However, the battery capacity remains unchanged at 45 kWh.

The BYD Dolphin Comfort represents a significant advance in the range of vehicles offered. With a 204 hp engine and a 60.4 kWh battery, it offers a range of up to 427 kilometers according to the WLTP combined cycle. This version also includes a Dirac hi-fi sound system with 8 speakers, as well as the equipment of the lower version.

On the other hand, the BYD Dolphin Design , which represents the top of the range, offers the same characteristics as the Dolphin Comfort, but with additional features such as a panoramic opening roof, two-way charging cable for electronic devices, rear windows colors and wireless charging for smartphones. It is available from 37,690 euros .

As for the MG4 Electric , its more powerful and better equipped version has a starting price of 37,190 euros , offering very similar equipment to that of the BYD Dolphin, but with a slightly larger battery of 64 kWh, which allows it to travel 435 km, against 427 km for the Dolphin.

However, BYD took note of the competition from MG and launched the Dolphin range with similar versions in terms of power, battery, equipment and price, as well as a cheaper entry-level option. The latter, thanks to the Government's Aid Plan and the direct discount from the brand of 1,210 euros, remains available at 21,280 euros .
