China wants to offer exciting electric cars to Europe, like the MG Cyberster, not just cheap models

La Chine veut offrir des voitures électriques passionnantes à l'Europe, comme la MG Cyberster, et pas seulement des modèles bon marché

Two-seater roadster cars are undeniably among the most exciting that exist. For most of the 20th century, European builders dominated this category with authority, but eventually reveled in their success, allowing the Japanese to take over.

Since the late 1980s, the Mazda MX-5 has been the benchmark two-seater roadster, being the best-selling convertible of all time. However, it was almost left alone in the market, without even having a direct competitor.

An imminent change is looming on the horizon. The MG Cyberster , which was previously presented in prototype form and the first images of which were leaked a few days ago, has been officially confirmed by the brand for release in Europe next summer.

Summer 2024 will see its arrival

Official photos of the Cyberster released by MG feature the same protagonist as images leaked by the Chinese government last week, meaning the vehicle's design comes as no surprise.

However, these new photos confirm some details that had not yet been revealed. MG has also confirmed that the production version will retain the vertical doors without handles, which could be operated electrically.

We already knew the Cyberster would have a power canvas roof, and while we haven't seen the interior in detail yet, the images show a driver-centric driving position that provides an immersive experience.

Last week in the technical section, it was clear that the anti-MX-5 would be far behind its rival in terms of weight, size and power. However, it should be noted that the current Mazda MX-5 was launched eight years ago, which means that its economic life cycle is coming to an end and a fully electric version could replace it. If that happened, the next Miata would be bigger and heavier, bringing it closer to the Cyberster concept .

For reference, the MG convertible is currently 4.53 meters long, 1.33 meters high and 1.91 meters wide. The current Mazda MX-5 is 3.91 meters long and the BMW Z4 is 4.32 meters long. As for the weight, the lightest Cyberster will weigh 1,850 kg while its most powerful version will reach 2,075 kg.

The access version of MG's Cyberster will use a 231 kW (314 hp) electric motor for rear-wheel drive. In contrast, the more powerful variant will have two electric motors, each for one axle, providing a maximum combined power of 400 kW (536 PS). This version will transform the Chinese model into an all-wheel-drive convertible, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3 seconds.

Next week, the MG Cyberster will make its public debut. On this occasion the interior will be unveiled and we may also be able to know the details of the battery and autonomy. Later, as it approaches its commercialization in Europe, the price will be announced by MG.
