General Motors wants to create its own engine so Cadillac can race in F1

Cadillac's arrival in Formula 1 is becoming one of the most anticipated television events of the coming months. Although it announced at the beginning of the year its intention to participate with Andretti , the American company faces an obstacle, because most teams do not want an eleventh structure.

However, General Motors has recently taken a further step to ensure its request is taken seriously by Formula 1 . Indeed, it plans to develop its own engine for the 2027 season, which would make Cadillac the seventh entry on the starting grid, and likely earn it final approval to race in Formula 1.

Cadillac would have its own engine from 2027

Although the other teams oppose Cadillac's entry into Formula 1 , the FIA ​​has already opened a door to allow the American manufacturer and Andretti to participate. Two new places for the teams will soon be in competition and Cadillac is the big favorite to get one. However, they want to be welcomed and for this reason General Motors has made a decisive decision.

According to Eric Warren , executive director of General Motors' competition department, "we are looking at producing our own powertrains." Warren believes that the cooperation between Andretti and Cadillac must be total, hence the need to have their own engine.

Should General Motors go through with their idea, it would make them the seventh different automaker to compete in Formula 1 under the new rules, joining Ferrari, Renault, Mercedes, Honda, Audi and Ford . Their intention is to enter the race in 2027, but until then the Cadillac team would be powered by another brand, probably Renault or Honda.

Warren explained that their goal is to start competing in Formula 1 and make sure they are competitive before deciding what is best for them. He thinks it's hard to design a 100% engine right now and it's best to work with technical partners. He is convinced that their team has the necessary skills to succeed.

General Motors is already involved in using hybrid engines in IndyCar through Chevrolet , as well as WEC and IMSA through Cadillac. They are now planning to participate in Formula 1, which would clarify their intention not to use Cadillac for purely advertising purposes like Alfa Romeo.

It is obvious that General Motors' commitment to Formula 1 is serious, but its acceptance remains to be seen.
