"Farewell Ford Fiesta: The electric Explorer takes its place!"

The end of production of the Ford Fiesta marks the end of an era. Ford recently announced that manufacturing of the Fiesta will be halted starting next week. This paves the way for a new chapter: that of 100% electrification.

The Ford Fiesta will retire on July 7

This decision was made in order to free up space in the factory in Cologne, Germany, for the production of Ford's new electric SUV, the Explorer. The last Fiesta will roll off the assembly line on July 7, 2023. After 47 years and eight different generations, the reign of the Fiesta is coming to an end to make way for an electric future.

By abandoning the Fiesta, Ford takes the risk of leaving the segment of versatile city cars, which nevertheless remains strong in Europe. It's a bold move that will see Ford stick to its roadmap and become an all-electric brand in Europe by 2030. The US automaker promises to offer a range of nine electric models by 2024.

Production: An accelerated transition thanks to the partnership with Volkswagen to use the German MEB platform. Ford has big ambitions on the electric. The blue oval brand hopes to double its sales and reach 1.2 million units sold over the next six years. For this, the manufacturer is counting on its new 100% electric SUV. The Explorer model is currently unanimous.

A very nice, versatile "medium crossover", which ticks all the boxes for everyday life and holidays. Starting price: 45,000 euros. This 100% electric model will come out of the newly inaugurated “Ford Electric Vehicle Center”. The Cologne-Niehl plant was recently converted to manufacture 250,000 electric vehicles per year. Founded in 1930, this production site is historic for Ford. Now it will be "Ford's first carbon-neutral assembly site to open globally".

According to Martin Sander, managing director of Ford Model E Europe, Ford's electric arm in the Old Continent, “we decided to build our first high-volume electric vehicle here in Cologne. This is a crucial moment for the automotive industry and choices have to be made. This is why we had to take the decision to stop production of the Fiesta”.
