It looks like Aston Martin is set to team up with Honda, which would mean Fernando Alonso won't be using Mercedes engines in Formula 1 anymore

It looks like Formula 1 is about to see an unexpected alliance form. According to sources close to the negotiations, Aston Martin and Honda are finalizing an agreement for the Japanese to become the new engine suppliers for Fernando Alonso 's team . It would be a significant change for Aston Martin , which would abandon Mercedes to become Honda 's sole customer .

Although nothing has been officially confirmed, it seems that the two parties have already reached an agreement and that only a few details remain to be settled. If the deal goes through, it would allow Fernando Alonso to reconnect with Honda, with whom he has had a difficult relationship in the past. Of course, that would depend on whether he continues to work with Aston Martin when the deal materializes, which wouldn't happen until 2026.

Honda would supply the engines to Aston Martin from 2026

Six brands have confirmed they will build engines in Formula 1 from 2026, but Honda is the only one that has yet to find a partner team. Although talks have been held with McLaren to renew their historic association, this now seems unlikely.

Honda opted for Aston Martin instead, which makes sense as they are the only team that is among the elite of Formula 1 without being its own manufacturer. Although Aston Martin considered making its own engine, it ultimately chose to partner with Honda.

Even though Aston Martin have had a joint ascent with Mercedes , they are aware that by competing against their own driver they will be at a disadvantage to winning the World Cup at Silverstone. Therefore, they have opted for a single engine supplier, Honda, which will focus exclusively on their team.

The other manufacturers such as Audi, Mercedes, Renault and Ferrari already have their own respective teams, while Ford is associated with Red Bull . Honda is the only option available and continues to dominate the last world championships with Red Bull. Therefore, Aston Martin seems to have made its final decision.

Martin Whitmarsh , who has successfully brought Honda to McLaren in the past and currently works for Aston Martin, is seen as a key figure in the deal. This will take effect in 2026, when engine regulations change. It remains to be seen whether Fernando Alonso will still be a driver for Aston Martin at the age of 45 by then.

If so, Honda will have to agree to work with a driver who was banned in the past due to his tumultuous relationship with McLaren, and later joined Toyota to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans .
