More and more manufacturers are adopting eFuels, and Stellantis is already testing them in all its engines

Stellantis prefers not to put all its eggs in one basket when it comes to battery electric cars. In addition to working on the design of hydrogen-powered vehicles , the company is also exploring synthetic fuels.

This approach aims to reduce CO₂ emissions by using eFuels in combustion models, whether diesel or petrol cars, manufactured by Stellantis since 2014.

Synthetic fuel is intended for use in 28 million engines

Stellantis actively and passively affirms its commitment to battery electric cars, evidenced by the electrification of nearly all of its vehicles across all of its brands, ranging from hybrids to 100% electric, making it one of the companies offering the most zero-emission vehicles.

However, although hydrogen has been a serious alternative for Stellantis, which has developed and sold models of fuel cells and acquired a leading company in this field, the company remains open to other options.

Indeed, with the opening of Europe to eFuels , Porsche having already invested in this technology and Toyota testing an eFuel promising to be 75% cleaner than gasoline, Stellantis does not want to be outdone and is also testing these fuels.

According to the French company, it is currently conducting tests on eFuels in 28 engine categories, with the aim of finding a viable alternative to reduce carbon emissions and meet Europe's environmental objectives.

These tests aim to evaluate the possible use of this synthetic fuel, made from CO₂ captured in the atmosphere and renewable energy , in 28 million Stellantis internal combustion engines, produced since 2014 and compliant with Euro 6 regulations and following in Europe.

Combustion engines manufactured until 2029, when Stellantis plans to cease production, will also be included.

The eFuels will be used in both diesel and gasoline units, enabling extended use of these engines while reducing carbon emissions.

Carlos Tavares , CEO of Stellantis , stressed the importance of finding efficient alternatives to reduce CO₂ emissions from the existing 1.3 billion internal combustion engine cars, while continuing their aggressive electrification strategy.

In this sense, he said that making Stellantis engines compatible with eFuels is another initiative to help customers fight global warming and have an immediate impact. This action also aligns with their commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2038.

Stellantis conducts tests on eFuels, which include various aspects such as exhaust emissions, engine performance, reliability, starting ability, oil dilution, fuel tank, fuel lines and filters, among others.

By using synthetic fuels, the company plans to reduce up to 400 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions in Europe by 2050, starting as early as 2025.
