Nissan reaches one million electric vehicles sold

Nissan-ChillOut

Nissan, one of the major car manufacturers, reached a significant milestone by selling more than one million electric vehicles, twelve years after the launch of the Leaf.

The Nissan Leaf, precursor of Electric Cars

Considered for a long time as a pioneer in the field of Electric Vehicles, Nissan has managed to sell one million of these Vehicles, including 650,000 copies of the Leaf, the brand's emblematic model equipped with an Electric Motor. When it was released in December 2010, the Nissan Leaf was virtually alone in the electric segment and recharged using an Electric Motor running on Lithium-ion batteries.

A Transformed Market and Tesla's Competition in the Global Automotive Market

The Automotive Electric Vehicle Sector has since evolved considerably with many Automakers launching at least one All-Electric model equipped with an Electric Motor to meet growing demand in the Global Automotive Market. The Nissan Leaf was once the best-selling electric vehicle in the world until the arrival of the Tesla Model 3 in 2017, which quickly took the lead in registrations. Electric vehicle journeys have become more common, with more efficient engines and increased range thanks to lithium-ion batteries offering greater KWh capacity.

Nissan faces competition from Tesla in the Global Automotive Market

Although the sale of one million Electric Vehicles is a success, Nissan finds itself in comparison with Tesla, another major car manufacturer, which sold 888,000 Electric Vehicles in the first half of 2023 and is aiming for 1.8 million. sales for the year (compared to 1.3 million in 2022). Tesla benefits from the popularity of its Zero-Emission Electric Vehicles and their low impact on CO2 and pollutant emissions.

The Nissan Leaf: losing momentum on the French Automotive Market

Nissan did not know or wanted to rethink its model to fight competition in the Automotive Electric Car Market. Sales fell, losing market share to competing Electric Vehicles offering better performance, particularly in terms of range. In 2022, only 2,410 units of the Leaf were sold in France, despite incentives such as the Ecological Bonus for the purchase of an Electric Vehicle from a Car Manufacturer.

Nissan's Electric Future in the Automotive Industry

Despite these challenges, Nissan plans to launch the replacement for the Nissan Leaf by 2026. The Automaker intends to produce this new model in the UK and aims to electrify most of its vehicle range by 2028. The next generation of the Leaf will be radically different, perhaps adopting a Citadine aesthetic, a small urban SUV equipped with an Electric Motor.

Nissan's future electric projects and New Vehicles

Since the launch of the Leaf, Nissan has not been very active in the electric segment, with the exception of the timid release of the Ariya, an Electric Vehicle equipped with an Electric Motor on which Nissan has decided to adopt Tesla's NACS connector to appeal to American buyers. However, the Japanese manufacturer plans to launch two new electric sedans by 2026 and two new SUVs, including one called Skyline, with more advanced electric engines to further reduce CO2 and pollutant emissions, and conquer a greater market share. in the Automotive Sector of Vehicle Sales.
