Prepare the bib: Ferrari expands its family of plug-in hybrids with the spectacular 830 hp 296 GTS targa

Those of Maranello have just presented in society a new addition to their family of plug-in supercars with a most tempting signing: the Ferrari 296 GTS , a targa version of the mid-engine 296 GTB coupe that debuted in June last year.

The two-seater, rear-wheel drive 296 GTS convertible is powered by the same powertrain that debuted in its predecessor : a turbocharged V-6 engine with a maximum output of 663 hp combined with a 122 kW (167 hp) electric motor. Together , both engines add up to a whopping 830 hp.

The electric motor of this PHEV works with a 7.45 kWh lithium-ion battery and the range in electric mode is just 25 km.

The name of the 296 GTS combines its displacement (2.9 l) and number of cylinders (six) with the acronym GTS ( Gran Turismo Spider ), previously used as the surname of Ferrari roadsters. Upon its arrival on the market, it will be the second model from the house of the 'Cavallino Prancing' to mount a V-6 after the already iconic Ferrari Dino of the late 1960s.

The impressive 296 GTS hybrid supercar has a design marked by elegant yet muscular lines like the 296 GTB berlinetta, with which it naturally bears great similarity.

On the outside, the design of the front stands out, which reveals part of the mechanics, although its most characteristic feature is the retractable hard top that only takes 14 seconds to retract or unfold at speeds of up to 45 km/h, depending on the brand.

In terms of interior design, the cockpit of the Ferrari 296 GTS is simple and elegant, eliminating the superfluous and improving the language introduced by the SF90 Stradale .

Thus, it has a minimalist dashboard , a fully digital instrument panel and a head-up display. For the 296 GTS the seats have been designed with a specific shape to maintain aesthetic coherence with the exterior design.

Under the hood, the heat engine is the same 2,992 cc V6 from the 296 GTB, with 663 hp and 740 Nm of maximum torque, which has two turbos installed inside the 'hot vee', and is combined with the also known 122 kW (167 hp) electric motor powered by a 7.45 kWh battery.

The electric unit sits between the engine itself and the transmission, which is the same as the eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox used in the SF90 Stradale , but modified for a more exciting drive.

The new roadster promises acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and from 0 to 200 km/h in 7.6 seconds (just 0.3 seconds slower than the 296 GTB). In addition, it encrypts its maximum speed above the threshold of 330 km / h and 135 km / h in the case of fully electric mode (eDrive).

The 296 GTS has a curb weight of 1,540 kg ( it weighs 70 kg more than the coupé , among other things because of the roof and the mechanism that unfolds and retracts it).

In the equipment section, the 296 GTS has a system called TMA or "Transition Manager Actuator" that allows the driver to quickly alternate (and from the steering wheel itself) between the different driving modes that the car has: Hybrid, eDrive, Performance and Qualify, the most radical.

Likewise, Ferrari has redesigned the ABS to achieve a more effective intervention so that “braking at 200-0 km/h is 8.8% shorter in the 296 GTS than in the F8 Tributo ”, according to the brand.

As was the case with the SF90 Stradale, Ferrari offers an Assetto Fiorano package for the new roadster , which is more extreme and designed for track use. Among others, this includes elements of lightweight construction (such as additional elements of carbon fiber both in the exterior and in the passenger compartment) and modifications designed to improve aerodynamics.

These include competition- grade Multimatic shock absorbers , a Lexan polycarbonate rear window, redesigned doors to reduce weight and, as an option, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2R tires . To finish off the set, this package also allows the incorporation of a special decoration called "250 Le Mans".

At the moment neither its price nor when it will hit the market have been announced, but the Ferrari 296 GTS already has orders open. For reference, the 296 GTS starts at 269,000 euros in Italy (before taxes).
