The long-awaited MG Cyberster marks the British firm's return to the roots of its sports car production, following the demise of its last such model, the mid-engined MG , which had become a classic. Today, under the control of a Chinese company, the MG Cyberster is finally about to be presented definitively.

Images leaked by the Chinese government, via the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, have revealed what the production version of this highly anticipated convertible will look like, which will first be available in China before being released. marketed in Europe.

This is a roadster that isn't British or lightweight

Two years ago, in April 2021, MG unveiled a prototype two-seater roadster , with the promise of mass-producing this concept. This would mean that the brand would return to its roots by again offering a vehicle of this type in its range, although this one would have Chinese DNA.

A few months later, a video of the brand timidly showed the supposed production model. We knew then that MG was betting 100% on electrification for this car, which could make it a zero-emissions rival for the Mazda MX-5 , or even surpass the highly anticipated Tesla Roadster .

It would finally seem that the production of the MG Cyberster will precede that of the Tesla Roadster, because the latter is still pending while the Chinese has already been seen before its official presentation at the Shanghai Auto Show, which will open its doors on next week.

Currently, only two images of the final version that will be marketed in China have been unveiled. However, the European variant is expected to be almost identical except for the rear logos and some design details.

Although it was initially thought that the car would come with a hardtop, it would eventually come with a soft top similar to that used by the MG TF . Unlike the Mazda MX-5 Soft Top , the car will be electric rather than manual.

Customization options will include various colors for the canvas roof and several models of alloy wheels, available in 19 or 20 inches depending on the version. Different logos will also be offered, including one reminiscent of the classic MG.

The MG Cybersters concept was presented two years ago.

According to the information revealed at the same time as the images, the Cyberster will be significantly larger than the Mazda MX-5, which is 3.91 meters in length, and even the BMW Z4 , which is 4.32 meters in length. , with a length of 4.53 meters, a height of 1.33 meters and a width of 1.91 meters. In addition, it will be heavier, with a minimum weight of 1,850 kg and a more powerful version that will reach 2,075 kg.

It is obvious that these figures do not correspond to what is expected of a British convertible, which is traditionally characterized by its lightness, which allows it to provide unique driving sensations without requiring great power.

It remains to know the interior. It will be less futuristic than the prototype.

With the era of electrification, MG's strategies to counter their vehicle's overweight problem have changed. They decided to go for power, fitting the Cyberster with a 231 kW (314 hp) electric motor that will be directly connected to the rear wheels. The highest-performance variant, meanwhile, will have two electric motors, one for each axle, for all-wheel drive and a combined output of 400 kW (536 hp). According to the theories, this version could fulfill the promises of the prototype and achieve an acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 3 seconds .

However, the autonomy of the two versions remains to be determined. Two years ago, MG declared a capacity of 800 kilometers between charges, but this remains a very optimistic figure, which needs to be confirmed. We'll know more about the Cyberster soon, including its interior and hopefully its European release date.
