After years of freedom without regulation, the authorities have decided to legislate the public charging sector in order to improve the user experience. According to the texts adopted by the European Parliament, the English government wishes to set new rules to be respected.
Until now, each operator had its own payment badge to initiate charging, which led to card incompatibility with the terminals of other operators. To remedy this situation, the new regulations will require operators to offer a contactless payment system directly on the terminal, thus avoiding the use of applications or Internet links. In addition, billing should be based on energy consumption, with a clear display of the price per kilowatt hour. Operators would risk a fine of £10,000 for each non-compliant terminal.
The authorities will also impose a minimum level of availability of 99% for charging stations. This means that operators will have to ensure rigorous maintenance of the terminals and set up real-time communication systems to inform users of their availability. Additionally, 24/7 customer support will be required.
This bill, similar to European standards, aims to regulate the electric charging market and encourage operators to offer a transparent and reliable service to the growing number of electric car drivers. It represents an important step forward in the transition to more practical and accessible electric mobility.
