That Fernando Alonso wants to race the 24 Hours of Le Mans again is no secret. After his two successful participations, the Asturian driver has never hidden his desire to return to the legendary Sarthe circuit in the future, and he now has a project that will delight all racing fans.
In an interview with De Telegraaf, Alonso offered Max Verstappen to race the 24 Hours of Le Mans together . And it is that the Dutchman has always been interested in endurance races, and even tried to participate in the legendary French race, although Red Bull prevented him from doing so.
"I know that Max Verstappen wants to test endurance one day and race the 24 Hours of Le Mans, for example. The truth is that I am open to doing it together. We should definitely give him a chance if we can drive for a race competitive " team", commented Fernando Alonso in the interview.
It's no secret that Alonso and Verstappen got along well and, in a way, one is reflected in the other. They have always had high praise for each other, and now they could strengthen that relationship if they manage to do the 24 Hours of Le Mans together. They would make a formidable team almost regardless of the third driver.
Remember that Fernando Alonso became a Le Mans legend by winning the 2018 and 2019 editions consecutively, Toyota's first victories in the big race. Because the legend remains his overnight stop on his debut at Le Mans, during which he neutralized the huge advantage that his teammates in the n°7 car had taken from them.
As for Verstappen, when he was younger he tried to race in the LMP2 class as a car partner to his father, Jos Verstappen. It was in 2018, but Red Bull prevented it . Now, transformed into a big star of Formula 1, it would be much more difficult to curb Verstappen's desire for Le Mans.
Finding a competitive team doesn't seem too complicated, although Alonso and Verstappen's contractual ties in Formula 1 with Aston Martin and Red Bull respectively directly exclude certain brands, such as Ferrari. But with such a barrage of teams in the WEC, it wouldn't be hard to find another one.
Will we see a Dream Team at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the association of Fernando Alonso and Max Verstappen?
