The Toyota GR 86 has sold out in the UK in just 90 minutes . All the units assigned to the British market have been reserved in less than an hour and a half after orders were opened last week.
Sales of the long-awaited Toyota GR 86 opened earlier this month, with a starting price of £29,995, lower than the Toyota GR Yaris (which is around £31,000). But in less than an hour and a half, the Japanese firm closed the order platform for that country when it reached the unit limit, according to Autocar.
As Toyota has reminded, the production of the Toyota GR 86 will last only two years. In 2024, the Toyota GR 86 will no longer be able to be sold in Europe . This is because in 2024 the new European safety protocols (crash tests) will come into force , and the sale of vehicles that do not meet these standards will not be allowed.
This prohibition will apply even to units already manufactured, in stock and that hypothetically have not been able to be sold. That is, whoever wants a new Toyota GR 86 will have to buy it before January 1, 2024.
“To comply with these strict new regulations, the GR86 would have to be completely redesigned. In addition to being economically unfeasible for a small-volume sports car like the GR86, compliance with these standards would negatively affect the dynamic character of the car .
The new GR 86 recovered the base of the GT 86, which explains why the platform will not be able to comply with the new regulations, since it was designed more than 10 years ago.
Manufacturing and selling a sports car at a reasonable price is an arduous task, which is why the development of the GT 86 and its manufacture have been done in collaboration with Subaru.
At the moment, it is unknown how many units have been assigned for the Spanish market and the price of the GR 86 in our country. In any case, there is a certainty on the part of Toyota to position the GR 86 below the GR Yaris in terms of prices.
As in the UK, in France for example the GR 86 is below the GR Yaris. The coupé costs 33,900 euros, while the small homologation special starts at 35,600 euros. The Toyota GR Yaris starts at 35,550 euros in Spain, which could put the GR 86 at less than 34,000 euros in Spain .
It remains to be seen how many units are assigned, which will not be many, taking into account that the first year of marketing of the current Toyota Supra there were only six units for our country.
