The BYD Tang, a Chinese seven-seater SUV, is 48,000 euros cheaper than the Tesla Model X

Seven-seater SUVs , mainly hybrids, are becoming more and more efficient, whether they are plug-in or not. However, there are also fully electric models, and it is precisely in this niche that the Chinese manufacturer BYD Tang seeks to position itself.

Indeed, the company has just entered the European market with up to three models, including the BYD Tang, as well as the Atto 3 small SUV and the Han sedan , all of which are fully electric.

The BYD Tang, which can accommodate up to seven people and costs around 70,000 euros, is another Chinese zero-emission model which, like other models of this type, offers only one mechanical version and one finish. Being electric, it also sports the ZERO label . The Tang competes directly with the Mercedes-Benz EQB , although it is larger and more expensive by around 10,000 Euros in the most affordable configuration with three rows of seats. Compared to the Tesla Model X , the Tang is much cheaper, with the California Model X starting at 118,290 euros for the seven-seat configuration.

Space for 7 with 517 HP without sacrificing the trunk

The BYD Tang electric SUV is nearly 4.9m long and has a 2.80m wheelbase that offers plenty of space. Even with the seven seats occupied, its trunk remains quite spacious, offering a capacity of 235 liters, which is larger than the Renault Espace converted into an SUV in its new version, which offers only 159 liters with its three rows of seats.

By folding the seats of the third row, the trunk volume can reach 940 liters. If the second-row backrests are also reclined, the trunk volume can be increased up to 1655 liters.

There are more than 500 HP available and up to 400 km range for this car. It is equipped with two electric motors, one for each axle, which allows it to have all-wheel drive similar to that of the Tesla Model X which is less expensive.

The front engine delivers 180 kW (245 hp) while the rear engine delivers 200 kW (272 hp), giving a total power of 380 kW or 517 hp and a torque of 680 Nm. However, its power is lower than that of the twin-engine Tesla Model X which develops a total power of 670 hp.

Both fuels use a Blade LFP battery , created by BYD , which has a longer life than standard lithium batteries. The BYD Tang has a capacity of 86.4 kWh, the highest in the Asian company's range. 

It can cover up to 400 km in the combined cycle or up to 528 km in the city only, but this is less than the Model X, which can cover 576 km on its 100 kWh battery. Despite its high weight of around 2.4 tons, its consumption is not very economical, with a consumption of 23.8 kWh/100 km in the combined cycle and 18.1 kWh/100 km in the city.

However, the vehicle has solid performance, with rapid acceleration for its size and weight, capable of 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds (compared to the Model X which can do it in 3.9 seconds ).

The BYD Tang is very well equipped but does not offer additional options in our market. Personalization choices are therefore limited to body color, with five options available. It's similar to what's happening with China's Airways U6 electric SUV , which is also a five-seater coupe.

Despite this, the price of the BYD Tang is justified by its complete standard equipment, offering many technological features for assistance, comfort and connectivity such as LED headlights, 22-inch wheels, panoramic roof, tailgate electric, wireless charging for mobile phones, an electric parking brake and a reversing camera.

Inside, it has two horizontally arranged screens that can be rotated electrically: the 12.3-inch digital instrument screen and the 12.8-inch multimedia screen. Its infotainment system is equipped with DAB radio, 4G connection and connected cloud services.

Regarding ADAS technologies, the vehicle has various features such as an automatic emergency braking system, cruise control, lane keeping system, blind spot detector, as well as an assistant adaptive lighting for high and low beam, and a hill start assistant, to name just a few examples.

For the sum of 69,990 euros accompanied by a six-year warranty

The BYD Tang is priced at 69,990 euros , which represents a savings of 48,300 euros compared to the two-motor, seven-seater Tesla Model X. Although it offers less power and autonomy than the American model, its advantageous cost can be a strong argument for choosing it.

Nevertheless, it is possible to reserve it now and if the purchase is made before May 31, an 11 kW Wallbox charger will be offered free of charge. In addition, BYD offers a six-year or 150,000 km warranty, one of the most advantageous on the market, as well as a specific warranty of eight years or 200,000 km for the battery.
