There's a new king at the Nürburgring: the Mercedes-AMG One smashes the clock and is the fastest new production car in the Green Hell

Il y a un nouveau roi au Nürburgring - la Mercedes-AMG One fracasse le chrono et est la nouvelle voiture de série la plus rapide de l'Enfer Vert

Once again, the  Nürburgring circuit record  changed hands. This time the one of the production cars and the model that made it happen is the  Mercedes-AMG One , the hybrid beast of the star brand.

The German hypercar was the fastest on the  Nordschleife track  and according to the new measurement system, with a time of 6:35.183 minutes, whereas with the previous method it would have stopped the clock at 6:30.705 minutes.

The  Nürburgring circuit  is the litmus test that all sports cars coming onto the market must pass. It's the time it takes them to complete a lap of the Nordschleife track that determines their speed or slowness, as if it were one more piece of information on their technical sheet: maximum speed, 0 to 100 km/h and lap time in the green hell .

The absolute German track record is in the hands of the  Porsche 919 Hybrid EVO , a prototype that cannot even be used in competition because it does not meet any homologation regulations. He needed just 5:19.546 minutes  to complete a lap of the 20.8 km German track.

But there is another “more banal” record: that of production cars. Until now, it belonged to the  Porsche 911 GT2 RS MR , the craziest variant of the Porsche 911 tram (courtesy of the 911 GT1 straight out of Le Mans). However, the nine-eleven has been dethroned and the new king of the Nürburgring is the Mercedes-AMG One.

The star's hybrid hypercar took  6:35,183 minutes  to cross the green hell on October 28 at 5:14  p.m. is to go all out on the German circuit, having won the 24 Hours of Nürburgring in 2016 with the help of another illustrious Mercedes: Bernd Schneider.

To achieve the record, Engel had to work hard and make the most of the electric input of the hybrid propulsion system of the Mercedes-AMG One, derived from the  German manufacturer's Formula 1  .

And it is that electrification has changed the way of driving a hypercar and it is no longer enough to know how to drive, it is also necessary to take into account the recovery of energy and the way of using this additional help, without forgetting to other solutions from the AMG One, such as  DRS , which is essential on the straights and under braking.

Thanks to this, Engel reached a maximum speed of  338 km/h  in the fastest lap, a figure very close to the 352 km/h that this Mercedes-AMG can reach at its maximum. And that the track conditions were not optimal because the sun was about to set and the asphalt was colder than normal, in addition to having some wet areas. Normal at this time of year in Germany.

For the record to stand, the unit used must meet production specifications, including the tyres, which are  Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R MO tires  identical to those fitted as standard on this model. These tires are specially developed for the Mercedes-AMG One and work in conjunction with the carbon-ceramic brakes that the hypercar also has as standard.

As for the mechanics, remember that it uses a plug-in hybrid assembly consisting of a  1.6-liter biturbo V6 gasoline engine  and three electric motors, two of which are placed at the front and one at the rear.

Together they produce a total of  1,063 CV  , while the 8.4 kWh battery allows you to cover 18 km in electric mode, although on the track it is more useful, accumulating energy from braking to deliver it when the driver demands full power in the Race Plus driving mode.

Even so, it's striking that such a   Formula 1-derived  technological deployment only materialized in 8 seconds less per lap than the previous generation of Porsche 911 GT2 RS , with 700 hp and without materialization. Compared to its MR variant, the Mercedes-AMG is only 5 seconds faster.

Sure, the Porsche doesn't have  the Mercedes' ECO label  , but don't think being a hybrid is any less of a beast. All you have to do is see - and listen to - the  on- board video  that was recorded during the record-breaking Nürburgring lap.
