Toyota has not failed in the decisive appointment. The Japanese brand has won the title of endurance world champions for the fourth consecutive year after unceremoniously crushing Alpine in the 8 Hours of Bahrain, the decisive event in which the two brands arrived tied on points at the top of the classification.
The #8 Toyota already broke the tie this Friday, achieving a pole position that was well kept until the last minute, and at the start it defended that first position as if it were gold cloth against Peugeot's attacks. It was vital to be in front to take a title that they have suffered until the last day.
Toyota has authoritatively dominated the 8 Hours of Bahrain, even allowing #7, who could risk the most going full throttle, to take the win . The #8 led for much of the race, but stopped taking risks when they saw that the race was already well on track.
And it is that Alpine has not been able to even come close . The French brand has been able to rescue a third position on the podium, more due to Peugeot's reliability problems than anything else, but doubled twice by the Toyota. Only a serious mechanical failure of the #8 could give them the title, and it has not happened.
Peugeot is becoming more competitive, but still has reliability problems . On Friday they were clearly in contention for pole position, although in the end they were surprised by Toyota. At the exit they attacked the Japanese, without much success. But when they were on the way to the podium the mechanical problems began.
The #93 was left lying in the middle of the track due to gearbox problems, being unable to complete the race, while the #94 also had some problems that caused it to lose the podium against Alpine, although at least it has entered finish in fourth position. But the Peugeot 9x8 says goodbye to 2022 without a single podium .
In the end, Toyota won the drivers' championship by just five points , taking #8 from the #36 Alpine in the final round. Surely the French are regretting how they did the cousin in Le Mans qualifying looking for pole, which caused the BoP to punish them until they lost the podium with Glickenhaus. Six points now gold.
The other three championships were also up for grabs and were resolved without any surprises in Bahrain. Jota has won the LMP2 with António Félix da Costa, the #51 Ferrari has miraculously saved the GT crown , not without suffering as they have fallen to fifth position due to mechanical problems. TF Sport wins in the amateurs.
