Toyota launches its second fuel cell car in the fall, confirming its commitment to hydrogen

Toyota lance sa deuxième voiture à pile à combustible à l'automne, confirmant son engagement en faveur de l'hydrogène

Toyota is reinforcing its commitment to hydrogen by preparing to launch its next hydrogen-powered model, the Toyota Crown Sedan , which will also use fuel cell technology .

Although this sedan is not intended for Europe, it will have similarities with the Toyota Mirai , which is available on our continent. Besides the hydrogen-powered Crown sedan , Toyota has planned to release other models such as hybrid and plug-in hybrid crossovers and SUVs .

Toyota was one of the forerunners in the production of hydrogen cars , with the launch of the first Mirai nearly a decade ago. Today, the Japanese brand continues to bet on this energy and is testing different models of combustion engines running on hydrogen , both in gaseous and liquid form, while also developing fuel cells .

In addition to the Toyota Hilux , equipped with this technology, the Japanese firm plans to launch a second production model equipped with this system: the Toyota Crown Sedan , which will arrive in the fall of this year. This car will be essentially the same as the Toyota Mirai sold in France, but with a distinctive design from the Crown sub-brand, which will not be limited to the sedan.

Toyota plans to release not only a Crown sedan, but also two other variants, the Toyota Crown Sport and the Toyota Crown Estate , which will be a crossover and an SUV respectively. The latter two trims will both be offered as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, while the sedan will be the only one available in a hydrogen version, although it will also be offered as a conventional hybrid.

Given its classic sedan format, it will have a more traditional appearance and recall the brand's long history. It will be built on Toyota's TNGA platform , specifically the GA-L variant , which is also used for the Mirai.

The similarity between the Toyota Mirai and the new Crown Sedan is obvious.

The prototype of the Toyota Crown Sedan presented recently strongly recalls the silhouette of the Toyota Mirai, although the Crown is slightly longer, with a length of 5.03 meters compared to the 4.97 meters of the Mirai.

Therefore, it is likely that the Crown Sedan FCEV will use the same fuel cell technology as the Mirai, with three hydrogen tanks that give it a range of around 650 km and an electric motor developing 185 hp and 300 Nm of couple.
