Fernando Alonso found himself just 84 thousandths of a second from pole position in Monaco, after a remarkable performance on the streets of Monte-Carlo, like Max Verstappen. The latter will start from pole position, having set a time of 1:11.365. It was a thrilling classification and a memorable duel.
Alonso maintained pole position until the last second , completing an incredibly precise lap within the walls of Monaco. However, Verstappen's performance was even more impressive, brushing the walls and pushing his tires to the limit to beat Alonso's time by a further 84 thousandths of a second, which already seemed unattainable.
The competition for the lead promises to be exciting between Verstappen and Alonso. These two drivers have clearly demonstrated that they are among the best in Formula 1. You only have to look at the performances of their teammates to see it: Sergio Pérez had an accident during Q1 and Lance Stroll was eliminated during the Q2.
Now that the second driver is out of the race, Verstappen and Alonso will face off in an exciting strategic duel on the streets of Monaco. It will be interesting to see what strategy Red Bull adopts, whether it's slowing the pace to avoid building a gap or pushing to find an overtaking opportunity. Alonso will have to be careful at the start , as the driver in third position often has opportunities to pass the second in Monaco.
Charles Leclerc will be third on the grid. The Monegasque driver also set an impressive lap , finishing just a tenth of a second behind Verstappen and a few thousandths behind Alonso. At least he is guaranteed a place on the podium, and if he manages to pass Alonso at the start, he could be dreaming of victory, even if Verstappen is considered the favorite.
A huge surprise in fourth position with the presence of Esteban Ocon on the Alpine. The French driver set a perfect lap and took pole position, even though he was overtaken at the end of the session. He starts just ahead of Carlos Sainz, who struggled throughout qualifying and eventually found himself fifth on the grid.
The Mercedes demonstrated their true performance. Lewis Hamilton struggled in Q1 and Q2 qualifying , and he will eventually start sixth, overtaken by George Russell who will start eighth, even behind Pierre Gasly. The Q3 positions were completed by Yuki Tsunoda in ninth and Lando Norris' McLaren in tenth.
BOMB! Pérez has an accident and is excluded from the fight for pole position at the first opportunity ???????? #MonacoDAZNF1 ???????? pic.twitter.com/6ut3GiQSVI
A special case concerns Sergio Pérez, who had an accident in Q1 and will therefore start in last position. His chances of winning the World Cup are all but wiped out. The score will be very difficult for him. The situation is similar for Stroll, who will start in fourteenth position. We will see if Leclerc will be sanctioned for disturbing Norris in the tunnel.
