All Ford Maverick accessories can now be 3D printed: the new era of car customization is here

Ford Maverick

The Ford Maverick is being a success in the United States. It offers nearly the same hauling and towing capabilities in a smaller, more affordable package as the timeless and imposing Ford F-150 pickup .

Car customization is also an important element, but in this case, Ford has taken a new approach. Instead of selling accessories at dealerships, it proposes the files so that everyone can 3D print the accessory or accessories that interest them the most.

One of the most interesting features of the Maverick is the integration of a slot called FITS (for Ford Integrated Tether System) .

It's a small indentation that allows owners to add a myriad of Ford-made or homemade 3D-printed accessories like cup holders, ashtrays and anything else you can think of. The important thing is that it is compatible with the FITS cleft.

And since not all Maverick customers have the know-how to design their accessory in 3D, Ford has officially released the files needed to create those FITS-compliant accessories.

Some Maverick owners haven't waited for Ford and there's already a slew of DIY FITS accessories out there , dotting 3D printing repositories like Thingiverse with fun and useful items that anyone can download and print. From a hook for four supermarket bags to a support for Nintendo Switch through the typical mobile phone support, as they remember in The Drive.

And for those who do not have a Ford Maverick, but still want to print those accessories for their car, there is already a universal FITS mount that works for any car, whether we have a Maverick or not. And for those who don't have a 3D printer at home - they are still relatively expensive - there are online printing services and shops that can print, almost like a typical copy shop.

Currently, there is a lot of talk about the possibilities offered by OTA (Over The Air) remote updates and that some functions and options of a car are only available with an annual subscription. For the industry it is a small revolution, but 3D printing is another small revolution that has been somewhat overshadowed by software.

The manufacturer can manufacture increasingly complex parts at a reasonable cost, as well as speed up the production of tools and manufacturing aids. In the case of workshops and individuals, they can create personalized, complex and high-performance parts. They can also create new spare parts when the one needed is no longer on the market. The possibilities are numerous and Ford's idea with its FITS system is just one more aspect.
